July 7, 2024 Week #5

Monday, July 1st, found us heading up out of Seward. There was so much beautiful scenery going down we wondered what we would see. The mountains were behind us but the waterfalls did not disappoint. Some of them were just gushing

This Waterfall is called Bridal Veil Falls - it is 600 ft tall and the largest waterfall in this particular canyon and the tallest roadside waterfall in Alaska.

Groceries are expensive here - $5.99 for a half-gallon of whole milk

This was a travel day - it was foggy for a bit but cleared nicely

There is always road work going on - they have a short season to do repairs - they do large stretches at a time. This particular young lady was bored to death - we were the first car so it was fun to watch her kinda dance around look around just trying to stay awake we think.

She acted so excited when this work truck came by - she had someone to talk to

You wait a long time for the truck to go down and bring the cars, etc. going the opposite directions

Then you follow the pilot car for many miles through the construction zone

Still pretty lakes and hills to to look at while you wait or travel very slowly

We finally made it to our "home" for 4 nights!! Palmer, Alaska The longest we have stopped since starting our trip 5 weeks ago.

We took a day trip, in the Jeep, into Anchorage - first time we have seen 3 and 4 lane divided highways in a very long time and the speed limit was 65 mph!

We visited the Ulu Factory - the hanging baskets at the business and homes are just beautiful -

I am guessing because of the cooler temperatures

Great for chopping most anything. One side of the cutting board is hollowed out so nuts, etc. don't go flying the other side is flat. I have used for eggs, onions, celery, and cheese so far

Next stop was the Alaska Aviation Museum - it was right next to where sea planes take off and land

I unfortunately did not get a picture as it came up so fast but there was a bridge on the way to Anchorage called Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Memorial Bridge - it was over the Matanuska River.

Our dear friend Harry was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam - this was the day before the 4th and it helped us remember how much we owe these brave men and woman so that we live in freedom today.

The next day we drove to the small town of Wasilla for their 4th of July parade

She was just SO cute

July 5th, Friday was busy again. We both got haircuts, first since we left home and I splurged and got a mani & pedi

Went to a local farmers market and brought dinner home from the Mexican food truck

Pretty self-explanatory - we had a fun time and learned a lot about Reindeer

They had a few other animals also

There are a lot of moose in the wild around here, we haven't seen any yet but that's what we are told. It is illegal in Alaska to own a moose - these two are actually owned by the local Fish & Wildlife and the Reindeer Farm is caring for them. Residents can be put on a list that if a moose is hit on the road they will be called. They have 3 hours to come to the sight of the accident, dress the moose at the site and remove everything. Moose meat can feed a family for a long time so many residents get on the list and carry what they would need with them in their car or truck so they are ready when called. It takes 3 people to accomplish everything in 3 hours so people on the list have a list of friends who have agreed to help them.

We also visited a Musk Ox Farm

Alex Trebex, from Jeopardy, was very fond of Musk Ox and visited this farm many times - there is even one name Trebek

We topped the day off doing major restocking at the local Fred Myers store. It was the largest store we have seen since arriving in Alaska and the prices were not as bad as in some of the smaller towns.

We spent Saturday driving to Seward, AK. on the Kenai Peninsula. It was the worse weather day we have had. Constant rain, low clouds all day, chilly and damp and windy

We were camped right on the waterfront again which was nice but also miserable because of the rain

We along with many other people paid $50 with no hook ups to park along the city waterfront -

the place was packed with campers and tents

Since we weren't interested in doing anything outside we visited the Alaska SeaLife Center

This morning before we left was nicer. We drove around and took pictures of some of the beautiful murals around town. Seward is a port town - cruise ships and lots of fishing.
